A video for Kubus and Bang Bang from 2009. The video was on heavy rotation on MTV in the Netherlands and was also shown on music channels in other European countries. Now it can be seen on YouTube.
Bang Bang’s performance was filmed against a black backdrop. During the editing process I stumbled on the fact that the video editing program Adobe Premiere translates nothingness into blackness in the final rendered image. Initially all you see in the video is the whiteness of the rapper.
The video is an investigation of the idea of what whiteness means and how cultural norms are coded into the technology that we use to see and capture the world around us. It also questions the untroubled exaltation of ‘blackness’ and the presentation of a singular black experience by the multiracial Bang Bang.
